Pulau Gaya 50m Wreck - Wreck Diving MalaysiaThe Gaya Wreck is located off the West side of Pula Gaya. It lies in 50m of water, with the top of the wreck reaching around 36m. It is a very large wreck and relatively unexplored. Borneo Dream are currently the only Kota Kinabalu based Dive Operator providing day trips to this amazing dive site. This makes the wreck an incredibly interesting, and exciting, dive for technical divers. Please note that due to the depth of this dive site, it is only suitable for divers who are qualified in decompression diving. This is a must for all wreck diving Malaysia fans and is Technical Dive.
Whilst the identify of the wreck has not been confirmed. It is believed to be the Nittetsu Maru. On October 14th 1944, "Submarine Dace (SS-247) sinks Japanese merchant tankers Eikyo Maru and Nittetsu Maru and damages merchant ore carrier Taizen Maru off North Borneo. One of these ships is the wreck off the back of Pulau Gaya, probably the Nittetsu Maru (as this matches the description of the wreck). You can see pictures below of the Nittetsu Maru obtained from a Japanese website used for identifying ships.
